Madden NFL 16 Draft Champions Producer Tom Lischke Interview
The Natural: Hi, it’s The Natural with Sports Gamers Online, I’m here with EA developer Tom Lischke here, he is the architect, or one of the main guys behind- producer behind the new Madden Draft mode, which is super awesome, super exciting, can you tell us a little bit about it?
Tom Lischke: Sure, it’s Madden’s version of Fantasy Football, it’s kind of a Fantasy Football in the right experience. You know, you get in, you do your draft, you get your face team, pick through about 15 rounds to upgrade your team, and then you take that team onto the field. Play at a certain event, play teams and win them out, you play versus the CPU, or play head-to-head if you’re looking for higher level competition, and after that event, you can go right back into that draft.
The Natural: Also, we’re loving the game, playing it here, playing around with it so far, super excited about the new mode. Tell us about the draft, you can stop whenever you want to and resume it.
Tom Lischke: Yeah, so, you know, everybody loves Fantasy Football, but we had to make it work for Madden. So, some of the things that we thought were important is instead of having to collect a bunch of players, you should be able to go do it on your own, on your own time, so get in, do five or ten rounds, hit pause, go and do something else, you can always dive back in and pick up the draft wherever it was.
The Natural: So, what was the kind of thought behind this? The new mode kind of came out of nowhere, it sounded like people weren’t really expecting it, so it was really cool, who had the main idea behind this?
Tom Lischke: Yeah, a lot of it is just keeping an eye out for what’s really working out in the video game community, but then combing that with everybody talking about fantasy football and Madden for years and years, so what’s the way to bring a Madden fantasy football experience to the fans? And we know what we like in fantasy football, we kind of tried to really hone that down and distill it into something that everybody will have a lot of fun with and do over and over again.
The Natural: How many players are included in a draft?
Tom Lischke: So, in any given draft, you’ll see your base team, which is probably about 30 players, plus the 15 you add, but there’s the pool of being as many as we can add, it’s the guys that field all of the players for the ultimate team are helping out on this, so all the players that they bring, that’s the kind of stuff you’ll see in draft champions, you know, by the time you get to mid-year, you know, it starts at hundreds and gets up to thousands.
The Natural: You’re going to keep adding players as the years go on?
Tom Lischke: Yeah, those guys that are building that data, they’re doing an excellent¬¬ job bringing up the light all year long, they’ll be the guys really working on it.
The Natural: They actually put legends in there as well, right?
Tom Lischke: Yeah, you saw some legends in the draft today, right? Who’d you get in your draft?
The Natural: I got Tie Law in one corner and (inaudible) in the other corner, so we’ve got to tie up those corners.
Tom Lischke: Yeah, this is the first time some of those legends are getting revealed, so keep an eye out for it, I think we got ten of them in for 3 v 3.
