A baby has died of a Zika-related complication in Texas, making the infant the state’s first casualty from the virus, according to USA Today.

The announcement was made by officials with Harris County on Tuesday.

They revealed that the mother had been infected with Zika during a trip to Latin America then returned to the U.S. and gave birth to a baby with microcephaly which causes the head to be abnormally small.

The birth defect can also result in an under-developed brain.

Officials point out that Zika has not been detected locally in mosquitos or through transmitted cases.
