Zika continues to be a major issue in Florida, with officials announcing at a recent panel discussion that there are around 84 pregnant women in the state with the virus.

During the event, health experts revealed that the babies of these infected mothers will likely be born in “about five or six months.”

A WPLG report also states, in part, that “Doctors...said they have asked each woman to go public about their diagnosis and discuss their concerns, but only one has agreed to do so...”

One of the major risks is that their newborns could have a variety of birth defects linked with the disease including microcephaly which results in an underdeveloped brain and small head.

Despite the seriousness of the Zika problem, there have been conflicts over government funding to fight the virus as well as proposed methods to keep it from spreading locally.

In Florida alone, 604 travel-related infections and 56 other cases have been reported thus far.
