SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo has been secretly scanning millions of its customers’ emails for U.S. intelligence, according to a Reuters investigation.

Citing ex-employees and another source, Reuters reports that Yahoo was secretly scanning customer emails on orders from the FBI or NSA. The company reportedly tailored a program to search customers’ emails for set of characters. It’s unknown whether Yahoo passed on any information.

Responding to the report, Yahoo told Reuters it was a “law-abiding company” that complies with U.S. law. Google and Microsoft, two of the world’s largest and U.S.-based email providers, separately told the news agency that they hadn’t conducted such searches.
