Tokio, Oct 19 (EFE).- Spanish flag carrier Iberia resumes direct service from Madrid to Tokyo after an 18-year hiatus.

The company's inaugural 13-hour flight to the Japanese capital - Iberia's longest route at 11,165 km or 7 thousand miles -- landed Wednesday at Narita International Airport some 15 minutes ahead of schedule.

An event was organized by the Spanish Embassy in Tokyo to celebrate the service that connects Japanese passengers with other Iberia destinations in Spain, Europe and Latin America.

Iberia Chairman Luis Gallego described it as a very special day for the company.

"Today is a very special day because for the first time in 18 years an Iberia plane has landed in Tokyo", company's CEO said.
