The New York Times was scheduled to talk with Donald Trump on Tuesday, but just hours before, the president-elect tweeted a cancellation of the gathering.
Trump wrote, “I cancelled today's meeting with the failing @nytimes when the terms and conditions of the meeting were changed at the last moment. Not nice.”
That was followed by the tweet, “Perhaps a new meeting will be set up with the @nytimes. In the meantime they continue to cover me inaccurately and with a nasty tone!”
Trump then asserted, “The failing @nytimes just announced that complaints about them are at a 15 year high. I can fully understand that...”
The New York Times denies changing the “terms and conditions.”
According to Eileen M. Murphy, senior vice president for the publication, the Trump camp “…tried to yesterday — asking for only a private meeting and no on-the-record segment, which we refused to agree to. In the end, we concluded with them that we would go back to the original plan of a small off-the-record session and a larger on-the-record session with reporters and columnists.”
Trump’s refusal to meet with the New York Times comes a day after he called news executives and top anchors to Trump Tower, then, according to unnamed sources in the room, proceeded to criticize them for failing to cover him and the election properly.
