Severe turbulence breaks passenger’s leg, throws others out of their seats on Qatar flight

LAJES TERCEIRA ISLAND, PORTUGAL — It was a rough ride for 300 people flying from Washington, D.C. to Doha, Qatar on state-owned Qatar Airways this Sunday.

It all started when a passenger began suffering what was initially believed to be a heart attack. This prompted the captain to divert mid-flight to a Portuguese military base on the Azores for an emergency landing.

During this diversion, the plane reportedly hit severe turbulence upon descent. The plane apparently dropped so steeply, it threw people out of their seats. According to the Aviation Herald, a 3-year-old boy was sent flying across the aisle onto another passenger’s lap.

Several passengers also hit the ceiling, and some were left bleeding. One passenger broke a leg while others received minor injuries.

Three received treatment at a local hospital and the heart attack that led to the diversion ended up not being a heart attack at all.

Al-Jazeera Journalist and passenger Azad Essa tweeted photos from the airport following the incident. Many passengers had to wait five hours to be let through immigration, Doha News reported, citing Essa.
