A Naval officer took a moment out of his address at Pearl Harbor to give an apparent critique of Colin Kaepernick’s civil rights protest, reports CNN.
On Wednesday, while speaking at an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the attack on the base, U.S. Pacific Command Commander Admiral Harry Harris said, “You can bet that the men and women we honor today, and those who died that fateful morning 75 years ago, never took a knee and never failed to stand whenever they heard our national anthem being played."
Those present stood and applauded, but some reactions expressed via social media were less approving.
It was noted that the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place during a time of military segregation and most black men who served were given low-ranking assignments as cooks and attendants.
However, the Navy admiral's comments had plenty of support as well.
One Twitter user noted, "Good for him. These military men know what it takes to protect our country & flag‼️ Kaepatrick doesn't have a clue‼"
Another tweeted, "NOW THIS IS WHAT A PATRIOT LOOKS LIKE!!! We need a lot more like this patriot Adm. Harry Harris..."
