Gun Violence Research Is Massively Underfunded

by Sara RaoDespite the roughly 30,000 gun deaths a year, gun violence is the least researched cause of death in the United States. A new study compared funding for research on gun violence to other causes of death in America and found that while $1.4 billion should go to this research, only $22 million is spent annually. The study didn’t include injuries due to gun violence so the research gap may be even larger. Some attribute the gap to the 1996 Dickey Amendment passed by Congress in 1996. That bill makes it difficult for researchers to get funding for gun violence research.
