Girl said to be raised by monkeys may not be real life Jungle Book

BAHRAICH, INDIA — A mysterious little girl who was found hanging about near an animal sanctuary in Northern India has been attracting a ton of attention online, after officials working with her claimed they believed she’d been raised by a troop of monkeys. Upon further analysis, researchers argue that theory seems a little far-fetched.

In January, villagers driving by the forest noticed the little girl sitting alone, with a family of monkeys nearby. Concerned by her weak-looking appearance, they called police to get her to safety. When officers arrived, they claimed the monkeys surrounded her for protection, and went so far as to attack the cops. When they were finally able to separate her from the monkeys, one officer told local media the monkeys then chased after them as they sped away in his patrol car.

Upon arriving at the hospital in Bahraich, doctors explained she walked on all fours, screeched at the staff, and ate off the ground as a wild animal might. However, rather than hers be the real-life account of The Jungle Book, experts say it’s far more likely the girl was abandoned just days, or even hours before she was found. The district forestry officer explained that with more than 100 leopards in the area, there’s almost no way the girl could have survived that long. Not only that, but an officer who Walks the grounds everyday has said he had not seen the girl, and the fact she was found wearing clothes is suspicious to begin with.

Where she came from is still anyone’s guess, but doctors say she is eating, walking on two feet again and may well have a chance at a normal life.
