South-western Japan was hit by a strong quake on thrusday evening leaving nine people dead and nearly 1,000 injured. While the magnitude was much lower than that of the massive March 11, 2011 quake that touched off a huge tsunami and meltdowns at Fukushima nuclear plant, the intensity was similar because the quake struck on land and at a much shallower depth.
