Small plane crashes on busy California motorway

A small plane crashed on a busy California motorway on Friday (June 30), injuring the two people on board but miraculously no one else.

Video footage posted on Twitter captured the surreal scene, as cars drove by the burning wreckage during the morning rush hour.

Aviation officials said the pilot made an emergency call shortly after take off and was trying to return to the nearby John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, Orange County, when the plane crashed at around 9:35 am local time.

According to the LA Times newspaper, the pilot told controllers he had lost power in his right engine and was trying to land as the aircraft swooped low over area buildings and the highway.

Local KABC-TV showed traffic grind to a halt as police and firefighters surrounded the twin-engine Cessna 310, covered in fire-retardant foam.

The man and woman pulled from the wreckage were said to have traumatic but not life-threatening injuries.
