United Nations Collects Weapons Surrendered by FARC Rebels

The United Nations on Monday, July 31 began collecting weapons surrendered by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) as part of a peace deal with the Colombian government.Fighters from the Marxist guerrilla force had turned in over 7,000 weapons when they moved into demobilization zones in June. The Associated Press reported that the weapons would be melted down to become part of three peace monuments once the decommissioning process was completed in August.The five decade-long conflict between FARC and the Colombian government resulted in the death of at least 250,000 people.
