Pope Francis suffers minor injury in Colombia

Pope Francis had a slight mishap on the last leg of his five-day visit to Colombia. He lost his balance while riding through Cartagena in the popemobile. But the pontiff did not allow the incident to interrupt proceedings and apart from some bruising on his left cheekbone and eyelid the Vatican said he was well enough to proceed.

Thousands of people turned out to catch a glimpse and maybe touch Pope Francis, and to hear him talk of his continuing concern over social inequality.

“Here in Colombia and in the world millions of people are still being sold as slaves; they either beg for some humanity, moments of tenderness, or they flee by sea or land because they have lost everything, primarily their dignity and their rights.”

The Argentine pontiff is the first Pope to visit Colombia in over three decades and his trip has added significance since it is a demonstration of his support for the country’s peace process after 50 years of civil war between the government and FARC guerillas.

Dear Colombian brothers and sisters, thank you! I have met so many people who have touched my heart. You have done me a world of good!— Pope Francis (@Pontifex) September 11, 2017
