Abandoned Tuberculosis Sanatorium on Paoha Island, Mono Lake

Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #159!

Rotting away on Paoha Island in the middle of Mono Lake are the ruins of a creepy old abandoned TB sanatorium from the 1930s!!
These ruins are very challenging to visit -- the island can only be reached by a 3-mile kayak or canoe trip, as the water of Mono Lake is too salty for most motorboats. Also, because it is a nesting habitat for California gulls, Paoha Island is closed to humans until July 31 each summer....which means you only have a month or two of decent weather to access it. Furthermore, the part of the island with the ruins is choked with very dense, prickly brush...making a visit VERY complicated!
But it was totally worth it...what a creepy, fascinating and hauntingly beautiful place!
