The World's Largest Beach Cleanup

Mumbai's Versova Beach used to be flooded with trash — that is, until one man stepped up to put an end to the situation.

Afroz Shah, a young Indian lawyer, teamed up with a neighbor and started picking up trash along the beach, which stretches out to be more than a mile and a half. Soon, other volunteers joined in, cleaning toilets and planting coconut trees. The group recently marked 100 weeks of cleaning Versova Beach.

The U.N. designated Shah as a "Champion of Earth," its highest environmental honor. Hopefully, Shah's work will inspire others to clean up the beaches in their cities, too.
