Cleveland last year completed the $50 million reconstruction of Public Square, which helped prompt more than $3.5 billion in investment in 29 projects
that have been completed or are scheduled to open in the city center, according to the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, a civic economic development group.
Milwaukee Downtown, a business development group, counts 34 significant commercial
projects just completed or under construction and valued together at $1.4 billion.
New hotel construction is valued at $460 million, according to Milwaukee Downtown.
One of the largest projects set to start construction is the Couture, a $122 million,
44-story lakefront tower with 300 apartments and 50,000 square feet of retail space.
It will be followed by the Milwaukee Bucks’ $524 million arena, financed with $250 million in taxpayer funds, which is set to open next year.
Northwestern Mutual is building a $100 million, 34-story residential tower with
10,000 square feet of retail space down the block from its new headquarters.
