Tug-Of-War With A 650-Foot, 43-Ton Rope

Watch massive, Japanese tug-of-war festival that takes place each year in Naha, Okinawa.

The games symbolize the rivalry between the area's eastern and western regions, and dates back to the 17th century. Nearly 300,000 people come out to watch the island's teams compete, which has them pulling a 650-foot rope that weighs 43 tons.

If the eastern team wins, it's considered an omen for health and happiness. And if the western team wins, it symbolizes good harvest and prosperity. The winning team is allowed to climb the rope to celebrate and is given pieces of the rope as trophies.

Good pulling!
