Hawaii lava tornado at night makes idyllic Leilani look like hell

Flowing lava and blue flames caused by methane in Hawaii have made the once-idyllic tropical hotspot look like the underworld.

In a video filmed during the night of May 28 in Leilani, a large lava pool can be seen smouldering next to a lava fountain.

A lava tornado briefly forms in the distance.

Blue flames are also seen – caused by the burning of methane gas in the ground.

The area of Leilani on Hawaii's big island has been inundated by lava following the eruption of the Kilauea volcano at the start of May.

Almost 30 homes have been destroyed in the neighbourhood.
