Families face evacuation after massive sinkhole opens near homes

The 65ft wide and 32 feet deep hole spread across a front garden and driveways in St Albans, Herts. Six families were forced to leave their homes and another 58 lost all electricity, gas and water when the hole appeared at Fontwell Close. Residents were first alerted to the drama by the sound of a loud 'thud' at around 1.00am.
