Rare Guam Kingfisher Born at Smithsonian Institute The tiny bird hatched at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Virginia on May 17. The bird is one of 140 Guam Kingfishers in the world, all of which are under human care. The Institute is currently raising the Kingfisher by hand because its parents ‘"did not display appropriate parenting behaviors." The bird is one of 19 chicks hatched from a breeding program that was started by the SCBI in the 1980s in an attempt to save the species.
