A group working to uncover mass graves in Raqqa, the former de facto capital of Islamic State in Syria, asked for international support of their efforts, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on July 3.This footage shows a operations at a mass grave that was uncovered in April at Raqqa’s Rasheed Stadium. A worker in the video describes non-stop efforts to extract and record details of the bodies found, but says the lack laboratory facilities needed to properly identify bodies means the group relies on the families of victims to identify clothes, hair or objects found on a body.“Raqqa city has at least nine mass graves, each one estimated to have dozens, if not hundreds, of bodies, making exhumations a monumental task, the HRW emergencies director said. “Without the right technical assistance, these exhumations may not provide families with the answers they have been waiting for and could damage or destroy evidence crucial to future justice efforts.” Credit: Human Rights Watch via Storyful
