Jamie Hughes: I aim to bring the Grand Slam home

Tipton’s Jamie Hughes wants to bring the Grand Slam home as he prepares to cross-over into PDC competition on home turf.

Hughes will take on a five-time world champion and former Grand Slam winner when the latter tournament begins tomorrow.

Darts fever will sweep through the Black Country with Sky Sports viewers watching live as fans pour into Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

New sponsors have come on board to back this year’s Grand Slam, with Austrian-based betting company Bwin replacing Thai brewers Singha Beer.

The only PDC tournament to formally invite players from the BDO again celebrates his 10th anniversary with the 11th edition at the Civic, the only venue it’s ever been held at.

One player from the BDO will feature in all of the eight groups with Hughes, the only Black Country player involved, making the cut through his ranking with the organisation.

The first group games will be spread over an afternoon and evening session, with the 31-year-old featuring in the penultimate game of the night.

‘Yozza’ faces Raymond van Barneveld in a first-to-five legs affair, with Gerwyn Price and Steve Lennon to clash elsewhere in Group B.

Hughes dares to dream of following in the footsteps of Scott Waites, the only BDO player to win the competition. The home thrower spoke to Tungsten Tales reporter Craig Birch.
