The most successful BMW model series is celebrating a round birthday: The BMW 3 Series was introduced in 1975 and founded a new vehicle category with the mid-range sports sedan. On the occasion of its 40. anniversary, the BMW Museum presents a new special exhibition starting on 8. May 2015. It highlights how the first BMW 3 Series developed over six generations until today. The exhibition illustrates design features and explores why this model series is so highly esteemed and much appreciated. The BMW 3 Series is regarded as the epitome of the sports sedan in the premium segment and remains the most widely sold BMW model series until this day. Its success story is characterised by numerous innovations above all in engine and chassis construction. For example the BMW 3 Series was the first car in its class to receive a 6-cylinder petrol engine. It was also the series which was fitted with permanent all-wheel drive by BMW for the first time.
