Pro-choice activists demonstrate as Argentina Senate debates elective abortion law
  • 6 years ago
Argentine senators gathered to debate the legalisation of abortion for pregnancies up to 14 weeks on August 8, with both sides taking to the streets to rally their stance.

Nearly two months after lawmakers in the country's lower house of Congress approved the bill by a slim margin, senators will vote on whether to send the bill on to President Mauricio Macri. If the bill is signed, the new legislation would significantly ease the deeply Catholic country's abortion laws.

Despite pressure from the churches, the pro-abortion movement in Argentina is growing due to feminist dialogue brought to the mainstream. This video shows demonstrators wearing green or dressed as characters from "The Handmaid's Tale", a novel about the oppression of women.
