Vaisakha Mahotsavam or Kottiyoor Utsavam is a yearly 27-day pilgrimage. This year is celebrated in the months of June and July according to the Hindu dates.

Akkare Kottiyoor on the east bank is actually a temporary shrine raised every year, where all the festivities take place.

This shrine has no sanctum and is located on a raised platform made of the river stones in the centre of a Thiruvanchira pond.

During the traditional ceremony, devotees have to circle the shrine within the pond, mostly in the rain as a ritual.

Basically, this temple festival commemorates the tale of Daksha Yaga and is a rarity where each community are given the right to perform specific duties for their pilgrimage.

The main highlights of the festival are Rohini Aradhana and Namboothiri, which are a set of unique rituals performed only in Kottiyoor.

Here the priest (who is the representative of Lord Vishnu) embraces the Swayambhu Shivalinga in the shrine.

This act is performed as a reminder to how Lord Vishnu embraced Lord Shiva to comfort him after the death of Devi Sati.

Another significant ceremony is Elaneer Vayppu, where thousands of tender coconuts are submitted before the Swayambhu Shivalinga, the water of which is later poured on the idol called Elaneeraattam.
