Barbarika was the son of Ghatotkach and Maurvi (Ahilawati).

He was trained in the art of warfare by his mother, Ahilawati who was believed to be a Naga Kanya. However, Ahilawati had taken a promise from him, which made him bound to the principle of fighting on the losing side in every combat.

It is said that this grandson of Bhima was capable of ending the Kurukshetra war in a minute as he was gifted with three infallible arrows by Sage Valmiki that would return back to his quiver once the set target was marked.

Just before the Kurukshetra war, Lord Krishna disguised as a Brahmin and challenged Barbarika to tie all the leaves of a Peepal tree using just his arrows. And, when Barbarika was shooting the arrows he secretly stepped on one of the leaf.

The third arrow came straight to Lord Krishna’s lotus feet and waited patiently there until the lord lifted his foot. Then after a long conversation, Krishna reminded him of his promise to his mother which would naturally make any army that he sided stronger.

After which, the lord asked him to give his head as charity. Many people question that why did Lord Krishna trick him into this clause. The answer to this takes one back to Barbarika’s previous life.

According to the tale from Skanda Purana, once Lord Brahma and other Devas had approached Lord Vishnu asking for help against the wicked beings on Prithvi.

At this hour, a Yaksha had told the Devas that there is no need for the Supreme Lord to descend for such task as he alone was capable of eliminating all the evil beings.

Hearing this, Lord Brahma was so agitated that he cursed the Yaksha to be reborn as a Maharati. However, when its time to eliminate the evil forces Lord Vishnu will first kill him instead.

This Yaksha later took birth as Barbarika and hence Lord Krishna sought charity of his head as a result of the curse.
