SC bans iron ore mining in Goa -NewsX

The Supreme Court has banned all mining activity and transportation of iron ore in Goa. And this ban is to continue till further orders. The court issued the order on a PIL filed by a Goa based NGO which alleged that illegal mining was going in Goa in violation of the Forest Conservation Act and other laws. It also said that this was causing serious damage to the ecology of the state as well as raising questions of transparency and accountability. The PIL, filed by the NGO Goa Foundation wants a Bellary type inquiry into encroachment and lease violations. The state government had banned all mining in the state in September, but the NGO has insisted that the mining is still continuing.
