The main opposition Liberty Korea Party has decided on punitive measures for two of its lawmakers,... who made inappropriate remarks related to the 1980 pro-democracy movement.
Kim Jin-tae received a warning,... while Kim Soon-rye has been deprived of party membership for three months.
In February,... the lawmakers came under fire after holding a public hearing with a far-right political commentator who has long claimed that the demonstration was orchestrated by North Korean troops -- something numerous investigations have proven to be false.
They also made disparaging comments, calling the movement a riot and the protesters a monster group.
Another lawmaker involved, Lee Jong-myeong , was earlier expelled from the party.
On May 18th, 1980, thousands of citizens in Gwangju protested against the military junta led by Chun Doo-hwan, who seized power in a coup.
