The World Food Programme has assessed North Korea's food shortages... and concluded that so-called 'hidden hunger' and deficiencies in micro-nutrients are the real crisis.
James Belgrave, one of the WFP officers that visited the North last month for an on-site assessment, wrote on the UN agency's website that the diets of North Koreans diets are largely limited to rice and kimchi or eggs far from balanced and nutritious.
He said what mothers and children eat during the first 1,000 days from conception to the child's second birthday has a life-long impact on a child's growth, but mothers struggle every day to find enough food.
Belgrave said that regardless of the geopolitical situation, humanitarian work in the North should be allowed to go ahead unimpeded.
