Japan's trade balance posted a deficit in July for the second time in two months.
Tokyo's finance ministry says Tokyo posted a trade deficit of 2.3 billion U.S dollars last month.
Weak exports to China out of trade tensions between Beijing and Washington are seen as the major cause of the decline.
Exports to China fell more than nine percent compared to the previous year.
The country's exports to Korea also decreased by almost seven percent on year.
The ministry said that it couldn't identify whether Tokyo's recent trade restrictions on Korea had affected the trade balance figure since there was no seperate data for the affected materials.
