Robert Frank, Revolutionary Photographer, Dead at 94 Frank was best
known for his book,
'The Americans,' which
was released in the
U.S. in 1959. The book, which contains 83 snapshots,
was once described as "the chasm between
the American dream and the everyday reality." Novelist and poet
Jack Kerouac wrote
the book's introduction. Kerouac said that Frank had "sucked a sad
poem out of America" with his photographs. The Swedish-born photographer
went on to make a name for himself
as a filmmaker in the 60s and 70s. He was called "one of the most important and influential American independent filmmakers of the last half-century" by film critic Manohla Dargis. His two children,
Andrea and Pablo,
precede him in death. He is survived by his
wife, artist June Leaf.
