Born and Raised in the lush English Countryside, sweet tempered Black Beauty is taught by his mother to be a friend to man.
He lives happily with his first master, Squire Gordon. The bond between man and horse deepens with the kindness shown by the Squire's stableman, John Manley. He shares the barn with Merrylegs, a small pony, and Ginger, an ill-tempered and bitter mare who, because of her own unhappy experiences with different masters, warns Beauty that he too will experience harshness and a hard life when he is sold again.
As the story unfolds, Ginger's predictions become a reality. Black Beauty is sold to several owners who use him as a 'job horse' for rent; to pull a cab through the busy streets of London' and to haul heavy loads, all of which will eventually take severe toll on him.
