14th November, 2009. Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto clashed with Cotto’s WBO Welterweight crown on the line. Cotto is looking to defend his WBO strap for the second time.

The Pacman came into the fight with a record of 49-3 and Cotto 34-1. Cotto had beaten Michael Jennings via TKO in February of the same year to win the WBO strap and had one successful defense against Joshua Clottey via a controversial SD. Pacquiao in his previous fight scored a devastating knockout victory over Ricky Hatton with a thunderous straight left hand that left Hatton unconscious for minutes and sent the Hitman into retirement. The KO was named as Knockout of the Year 2009 by The Ring magazine.

Coming into the fight, Miguel Cotto had victories over Joshua Clottey, Shane Mosley, Michael Jennings, Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana, DeMarcus Corley, Lovemore Ndou, Paul Malignaggi, and Ricardo Torres. Pacquiao on the other hand defeated David Diaz, Juan Manuel Marquez, Marco Antonio Barrera (2x), Erik Morales (2x), Lehlo Ledwaba, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.

It is during this time around that a megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather began its negotiations. However, as we all know the fight never materialized until 2015.

CompuBox stats revealed that Pacquiao landed nearly twice as many punches as Cotto. What’s more staggering is that Pacquiao landed nearly thrice as many power shots as Cotto. With this victory, Pacquaio became world champion in 7 different weight divisions while winning his 7th world title.
