Indian team has produced some of the greatest batsmen in the world but most of them have played in the middle order. India had struggled to find a good opener in Tests until Virender Sehwag made his debut in 2001. After the arrival of Virender Sehwag, the Indian team went on to create some world records in the longest format of cricket. He had redefined the opener's role in the Test cricket. Since Sehwag's debut, we have seen some players like Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Abhinav Mukund, and many others, who have opened the innings for India in Tests.

जब से वीरेंदर सहवाग ने क्रिकेट खेलना छोड़ा है. भारत को कभी भी सही और परमानेंट टेस्ट ओपनर नहीं मिला. रोहित शर्मा और शिखर धवन जरूर लिमिटेड ओवर क्रिकेट में सफल हो गए. लेकिन, टेस्ट में दोनों फेल. हालांकि धवन ने शुरुआत अच्छी की थी. पहले टेस्ट में ही उन्होंने ऑस्ट्रेलिया के खिलाफ 180 रनों की पारी खेली थी. मुरली विजय के साथ जुगलबंदी टेस्ट में अच्छी चल रही थी. मगर,फॉर्म खराब होने की वजह से निकाल दिए गए. वहीं, रोहित शर्मा टेस्ट क्रिकेट में अब तक कुछ खास कमाल दिखा नहीं सके हैं. इस बीच भारत ने इन खिलाड़ियों को मिलाकर 15 जोड़ियां आजमायी. राहुल ने सर्वाधिक 32 टेस्ट मैचों में ओपनिंग की जबकि विजय ने 29, धवन ने 21 और अग्रवाल ने 11 मैचों में यह जिम्मेदारी संभाली.
