Sonic the Hedgehog is a Japanese videogame franchise created by the Sonic Team and produced by Sega. The series is focused around high-speed platforming, with its titular character, Sonic the Hedgehog, as the protagonist. Sonic's peaceful life is frequently disrupted by the series' main antagonist, Dr Eggman. The very first Sonic the Hedgehog was created by the Sega AM8 division after being tasked with creating a new mascot for the brand, renaming themselves to Sonic Team after the first game's huge success.
Even though the Sega Genesis version of the game stole the spotlight, the Master System port managed to find a place inside the heart of its player base. Instead of taking the easy route and simply porting an inferior version of the Sega Genesis game, Sega created an entirely new adventure for the hedgehog, adapting it to the limitations of the console.
