The Adventure of the Speckled Band "is Sherlock Holmes' eighth tale, and Holmes's tenth story overall (following the novels A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of the Four), by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was originally published in Strand Magazine in February 1892, with illustrations by Sidney Paget, and later as the eighth story in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes collection.The story tells of Helen Stoner, a young woman who will soon marry and suspects her stepfather may be Trying to kill her to maintain control of her inheritance. Convinced of her stepfather's intentions, she turns to Holmes for help.
"The Speckled Band" is a classic closed-room mystery that addresses the themes of greed, inheritance, and parental freedom.
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson get up unusually early one morning to meet a young woman named Helen Stoner who fears that her stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, threatens her life. Roylott is a doctor who practiced in Calcutta, India, and married Helen's late mother when she was a widow and lived there. He is also the last impoverished survivor of what was once a wealthy, violent, moody and amoral Anglo-Saxon aristocratic family, and has already served a prison sentence for killing his Indian butler in a fit of rage.
