1996 | AS Roma 3 vs 0 AC Milan | Serie A Giornata 5
12 October 1996

FIRST HALF - On the bench, between the two coaches, it is an all-South American match: the Argentine Carlos Bianchi against the Uruguayan Oscar Washington Tabarez. The latter finds Baresi after the injury and in attack he lines up Baggio in support of Weah. Strangely, compared to what he did later in the season, Carlos Bianchi puts a lot of faith in the young Francesco Totti, who has just turned twenty, and places him in the role of playmaker with the task of communicating with Abel Balbo. Just thirteen minutes pass and, on an apparently too long throw, Totti takes off in search of the ball that seems destined to be picked up by Sebastiano Rossi; the Milan goalkeeper, however, is slow in relaunching the ball from the top of the area and lets it escape from Totti, who then concludes, in the now empty goal, with a magical right wing lob that inexorably overrides the intent defenders to recover desperately. It does not end here: a few minutes pass and Totti talks splendidly with Balbo, and after the triangulation between the two, the Argentine striker offers Cappioli, stationed in the center of the area, a ball that the Roman midfielder only has to place comfortably on the net. Milan are stunned, and cannot find themselves. The Rossoneri try it with the determination of Paolo Maldini, the author of a great percussion on the left and an insidious conclusion from the edge, with the ball splintering the crossbar. On AC Milan’s bad day, the referee also gets involved, who does not see a contact in the area between Lanna and Eranio.

SECOND HALF - Milan tries, but Rome closes very well and does not take great risks. In the final, Roma punished AC Milan on the counterattack and the third goal arrived. Delvecchio fights on the left and wins an aerial confrontation with an opponent, then serves Balbo in the area who burns the direct scorer and turns the ball to the far post. The Olimpico explodes with joy, Roma wins and finally forces Milan to their first defeat in the capital of the Berlusconi era.
