Analysts believe a severe cold snap could further deter Russia's advance as troops are forced to abandon vehicles or sit in "40-ton iron refrigerators."

Arctic air flowing through Russia and Ukraine, combined with easterly winds, will cause temperatures around Kyiv and the northern city of Kharkiv to drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius overnight in the next few days. Given the wind chill, forecasts say it could feel as cold as minus 20 degrees.

Analysts said that could complicate an invasion by the Russians, especially those trapped in a column of trapped vehicles 40 miles north of the Ukrainian capital. A Ukrainian military source said: "This will affect people in the convoy that is permanently stationed; it means that Russian troops remain next to it.
