Wuhu is located in East China, southeast of Anhui Province, downstream of the Yangtze River, and is an important part of the Anhui River city belt. The topography of the territory is high in the southwest and low in the northeast, and the terrain is bipartite. The Yangtze River divides the city into two major areas, the Jiangnan and the Jiangbei, with the Qingyi River, the Zhang River, the Shuiyang River and the Yuxi River running through the territory, and the Zhushi Lake, the Hesha Lake, the Longwo Lake and the Kui Lake scattered among them. It has a subtropical humid monsoon climate. There is plenty of light, abundant rainfall and four distinct seasons.
Wuhu has a long history, hence the place name Hatze, which is on the south bank of the Shuiyang River, about 20 kilometres southeast of the present-day city. The name was first mentioned in Zuo Zhuan - Three Years of Xiang Gong. During the Spring and Autumn Period, the name "Hatze" was given to a lake with many birds and turtles, which belonged to the State of Wu. In May 1949, Wuhu City was established.
