Assault vs FormaL: The CoD round that almost killed the OpTic dynasty

The superstar OpTic Gaming roster of Scump, FormaL, Crimsix and Karma stand on the precipice of defeat in the losers bracket and a 7th/8th finish at a tournament they were favorites to win; an event with the biggest prize pool in CoD’s history at that time.
After losing in the upper bracket, OpTic had made quick work of Infused and Luminosity to secure top eight, but their next match featured a familiar foe - an opponent who takes great joy in breaking the hearts of optic fans: Patrick “ACHES” Price.
ACHES, and his Cloud9 teammates Assault, Ricky and Lacefield, were heavy underdogs, playing their first event together against an optic side who had been competing, and winning, for over a year. But at champs, anything can happen.
OpTic started strong with a win on Breach Hardpoint, but Cloud9 didn’t go down without a fight as Lacefield dropped 35 kills and carried that momentum in the Search and Destroy, helping C9 tie things up at 1-1.
The intense match quickly drew a massive pro-OpTic crowd, despite being played on a side stage. The Greenwall fans heckled Cloud9 mercilessly, but that only added fuel to the fire.
OpTic took the lead again with a 13-1 uplink win, as FormaL picked up 39 kills, but the resilient C9 clawed back a CTF win to send the series to a game five S&D.
OpTic took the early lead, but C9 fought back yet again. Inevitably, the match came down to round 11, game 5. One S&D round to decide who went home and who stayed. This particular round would go down as one of the most memorable in the history CoD esports..
If optic lost, they would finish 7th AGAIN, the same as the previous year at the Advanced Warfare World championship. It would be ANOTHER notch in ACHES’ belt, having sent them home in 2015 with FaZe Red...
It was only fitting that it came down to a 1v1. Formal took down 3 Cloud9 stars, leaving only Assault left. The two AR players faced off in a winner takes all m8 vs m8 fight - and even the greenwall fans couldn’t deny fate...
