Public service audit reveals $20.8b spent on external contractors and consultants in 2021-22

A deep dive into Australia's public service workforce has found the former federal government outsourced more than a third of its operations. The Morrison government had promised to cut the cost of the public service but a new report reveals tens of thousands of external workers were hired instead, costing taxpayers billions.
