Two men dead after a serious incident at a rally in Sligo
Two men have died while taking part in a rally in Co Sligo, Motorsport Ireland has confirmed.
The Sligo Stages Rally was halted following the serious Carrowcushcly incident in Ballymote at around 3pm.
The driver, in his 30s, and the passenger, in his 40s, died when their car crashed into a wall during the sixth stage of the rally.
The bodies of the men were taken to Sligo University Hospital where autopsies will be carried out.
A technical examination of the facilities is currently underway.
In a statement, Motorsport Ireland said it offered its deepest condolences to the families and friends of two competitors.
Gardaí have requested that footage of this collision at the Sligo Stages Rally not be shared on social media or messaging apps.
Connacht Motor Club, which promotes the Sligo Stages Rally, confirmed the incident, adding that a new statement will be issued "in due course".
Motorsport Ireland also said it had opened a full investigation with the relevant authorities into the incident.
