French rally driver René Zereni, 26, was killed during the fifth edition of the Ronde Automobile de Calvi - Galeria - Calvenzana, on Sunday, 23 September 1984.

His #62 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 went out of control on a fast stretch of road, during a special stage of the rally. The car left the road, fell into a ravine and caught fire. Co-driver Toussaint Capocchi managed to escape from the burning car. René Zereni was burned to death.

After the tragedy, the event was immediately stopped. The rally was titled as "Souvenir Simon Quilici ", in memory of the French rally co-driver who was killed on 09 October 1982, during a reconnaissance session, in sight of the Ronde Automobile de Calvi. Ironically, Camille Bartoli in his Renault 5 Turbo was the winner on both the editions of the event.
