This movie was worrisome from the time of my being a child.
Why did Kurosawa make this movie in this time?
Probably, if it led to Ryotaro Shiba's (novelist) "Saka no Ue no Kumo", I would notice recently.
I think that this movie is expressing the feelings of the Japanese after the 1860s.
The people of Japan which was afraid whether to become a colony in Europe were able to make the modern state in the 19th century.
This movie is expressing the time of having been full of that hope.
In this film-making age, Japan warred with the U.S.
I think that I have said that Kurosawa needs to return to the starting point.
I think that Kurosawa is saying, "The Japanese of Meiji Era has a thing greater than ultranationalism and militarism."

この映画が、僕が子供の時から気になっていました。何故、黒澤がこの時代にこの映画を創ったのか？
恐らく、司馬遼太郎（小説家）の「坂の上の雲」に通じると、最近、僕は気がつきました。
1860年代以降の日本人の心情を、この映画は表現しているのだと、僕は思います。ヨーロッパの植民地になるのではないかと恐れていた日本の国民が、19世紀に近代国家を創ることができたのです。その希望にあふれた時代を、この映画は表現しているのです。
この映画製作時代に、日本は米国と戦争をしました。
黒澤は、原点に帰れと言っていると思います。
「国粋主義や軍国主義より、素敵なものを明治時代の日本人が持っている」と、黒澤が語っていると僕は思います。
