Harsh weather in southern China has paralyzed traffic, strained power networks and forced the evacuation of thousands of people. One person died and 1,200 houses collapsed after torrential icy rain lashed the region over the past few days.

Days of harsh weather have wreaked havoc in southern China, disrupting transport, straining power networks and forcing thousands of people to flee their homes, state media reported on Wednesday.

Torrential icy rain across the provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Chongqing, Sichuan and Guizhou has forced 58,000 people to evacuate from their damaged homes.

Freezing rain pummeled the five provinces in the past few days, killing one person and causing more than 1,200 houses to collapse, the ministry added.

The extreme weather has damaged 550 square miles of crops in the provinces that produce rice, timber and coal. The economic losses total more than $200 million as of Tuesday, according to state figures.

The icy weather and sleet have paralyzed traffic and strained power networks in some areas ahead of the vast migrations of people for the Lunar New Year holiday next month.

Highways in Guizhou have been clogged over the past few days, leaving thousands stranded in their cars, as almost all expressways in the province were closed.

But traffic slowly returned to normal in Guizhou on Tuesday as all ice-covered highways reopened after being closed for over 30 hours.

Weather forecasters warn that it could take five more days for the cold and rainy weather to subside in the region.
