India has designed a supersonic light combat aircraft named "Tejas". India's Defense Minister handed over the aircraft to the Indian Air Force at a gathering in Bangalore. Let's take a look.

India's Defense Minister formally handed over the light combat aircraft Tejas to the Indian Air Force in Bangalore on Monday.

[A K Antony, Indian Defense Minister]:
"After crossing a number of challenges and accomplishing a significant series of milestones of envelop aspersion, sensor integration and weapon delivery with our 1,500 sorties, the country is poised for a major turning point with the... of initial operational clearance of 'Tejas' aircraft."

The minister said the aircraft heralds the beginning of an era of modernization and self-reliance in the country's defense needs.

The aircraft had remained under development at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for nearly thirty years.

20 of the Tejas aircraft will be in service in the first squadron.

The project began in 1983 with a budget of nearly 125 million dollars.
