Created as a side project by singer/guitarist Jack Thornton in 2007, the History Department started as an acoustic act, with jack playing house shows and local coffee shops. Since then the band has gone through many various musical and lineup changes over the years, ranging from fully acoustic sets with string quartets to hard-hitting indie rock. In early 2011, Miles Randall (bass) and Marcus Shaw (drums) joined the band, to cement the line-up. With the use of spacey jangly guitars, distorted bass, face melting drums, and ensnaring lyrics they have crafted a unique and tantalzing sonic force. The band plans to release their first EP in early 2012, as well as playing extensively around Austin.
