Bold color gowns, big jewels on trend for Oscar carpet

It's the fashion event of the year: the Oscar red carpet. The time when celebrities pull out all the stops, hitting their marks in high end couture and million dollar jewels. This Sunday's (February 26) event will be no different, but there may be a few surprises, according to style expert Sam Saboura.

SOUNDBITE: Sam Saboura saying (English):

"I think every year at the Oscars we tend to see red, black and nudes. Those are really kind of the staples that we see, but I'm hoping to see pops of color. Color has been on every runway, and this season for spring, it's been a lot about pastels, softer colors, demure colors. So I think you're going to see, hopefully, some color this season. I think the last award shows have been a little dower, a little dark. I know the Oscars are a little more austere, so people tend to go for black, they tend to go for muted, neutral tones, but I'm hoping that we see some color."

In addition to color - expect to see more bling. Sabora said that Charlize Theron started a trend when she hit this year's Golden Globes carpet.

SOUNDBITE: Sam Saboura saying (English):

"Charlize Theron was wearing this incredible broach by Cartier that they had brought over from the vaults in Geneva, so it was telling us a little story that we're coming back to jewelry. So statement necklaces, statement earrings are really a big trend for spring, so I'm assuming we're going to see big, beautiful earrings. Of course, it's the Oscars so you're going to see diamonds."

Fashion isn't always about the young women - Sabora said that many look to mature women for fashion influences. Although some, like Meryl Streep, don't always hit the mark.

SOUNDBITE: Sam Saboura saying (English):

"Meryl Streep marches to the beat of her own drummer; she wears what she wants to wear. She tends to disappoint a lot of the fashion people who feel like she has so much potential to really blow it out of the park, but I think that Glenn Close is always very elegant, very ladylike and I think she is really not going to disappoint this year. She's going to give us elegance, probably Giorgio Armani, something tailored and dramatic."

So from fashion fantasy to faux pas - this year's carpet will surely be one to watch.
