Video purports to show anti-Assad fighters in action

Fighters opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad purportedly exchange automatic machine gun fire with Syrian troops near Homs.

This amateur video was uploaded to a social media site on Tuesday.

Another segment, also uploaded Tuesday, is said to show men taking turns to fire their guns out of a window at Syrian state forces also near the city of Homs.

More footage purports to show smoke rising from a building said to be a school in the area.

Reuters cannot independently verify the content of these videos.

Security forces killed at least 10 people in fighting across Syria on Tuesday, opposition activists say.

They say the rebels killed seven pro-government militia on Wednesday.

As the 14-month-old revolt continues, some warn that the situation could deteriorate into a civil war.

Despite an initial pause in fighting mid-April, a promised ceasefire has not taken hold.

Unarmed United Nations observers are being deployed in Syria to monitor the agreement that has been repeatedly violated by both state forces and rebels.

The United Nations says more than 9,000 people have been killed since the uprising began.
